Patras Bukhari Edition
Syed Ahmed Shah Bukhari, widely known as Patras Bukhari, was Pakistan’s first Permanent Representative to the United Nations from 1951 to 1954, during which he also served as President of the UN Security Council in 1953–54. Renowned as a “diplomat’s diplomat,” Bukhari quickly established himself as a highly effective and articulate spokesperson for the emerging Asian-African bloc. With eloquence and sharp intellect, he championed the liberation movements of colonized nations across Africa and the Middle East, emerging as a forceful critic of apartheid in South Africa and a vocal supporter of independence for countries such as Tunisia and Algeria earning deep admiration across the African continent. His leadership gave newly independent states a respected voice on the world stage. Later, from 1954 to 1958, he served as Under-Secretary and Head of Information at the UN, where he was instrumental in ensuring the continuation of UNICEF’s work, further cementing his legacy as a visionary diplomat and humanitarian.
